New research estimates that 14 million tonnes of microplastics reside on the ocean floor. The study was conducted in the Great Australian Bight, an open bay indented on Australia’s southern coast. Capturing the quantity of microplastics on the seafloor helps scientists better predict not only the distribution of microplastics, but also the impacts it may have.
