2023 was another breakthrough year for the Prevented Ocean Plastic™ programme.
We impacted industry: In 2023, the Prevented Ocean Plastic™ offering expanded to include HDPE material for non-food end applications, preventing even more plastic from going into the ocean.
Also, our core PCR supply chain recycler achieved Recyclass Certification this year. Transparency, plastic tax reporting, and supply chain traceability made easy!
We elevated standards: After a successful pilot, the Prevented Ocean Plastic™ Recycler Standards were rolled out across six recyclers working within the Programme around the world in 2023. We will be auditing and welcoming more in 2024.
We offered a better plastic choice: In 2023, the Prevented Ocean Plastic™ product count more than doubled! We continued working with our established and passionate partners- Lidl went from a bottle to a bottle with the launch of a new water brand packaged in our material, and Treaclemoon closed in on five million bottles prevented from entering the ocean. And we made a lot of new friends- Benyfit Natural protected people and the planet (and puppies) by packaging their pet food in our material, Eco Egg continued to clean up, and House of Dorchester chocolates were the first Christmas-themed product to be packaged in Prevented Ocean Plastic™. We also entered new product categories- including cosmetics, medicare and pharmaceuticals, and cushion filling.
Also in 2023, the Prevented Ocean Plastic™ 25 by 2025 mission continued. Through our fantastic partnerships with USAID & Circulate Capital, we opened recycling centres in North Jakarta and Semarang this year. And we’ll continue to build. In the words of Prevented Ocean Plastic™ Director Raffi Schieir, “At a time when there’s lots of negative talk avout the future of the planet, it’s good to be doing something that has an immediate and positive impact on people and their local communities. By choosing recycled and looking for the Prevented Ocean Plastic™ logo, we can all support responsible sourcing through these tangible, brick-and-mortar builds.”
Elsewhere in the world, Prevented Ocean Plastic™ continued its commitment to learning more about our industry. In 2023, we carried out a study to learn more about the lives and collection habits of first collectors in Ecuador, people who play a vital role in the circular economy. And we partnered with the University of Georgia to fund a new project to broaden our understanding of how litter on land ends up in our oceans. The first findings of both will be released this year.
2023 was another breakthrough year slightly closer to home and our headquarters in London too. We attended trade shows as an exhibitor for the first time this year! This led to exciting conversations at the Plastics Recycling Show Europe in Amsterdam and Plast Eurasia in Istanbul. Looking ahead, we hope to see you at Packaging Innovations and Empack in Birmingham this February, or at Plastics Recycling Show Europe in June 2024.
Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is built on a strategy of credibility first. Our team is focused on a mission to recycle, clean, build and elevate. But we will always welcome recognition for the Programme’s progress and achievements. In 2023, we were an official nominee for the Earthshot Prize. Prevented Ocean Plastic™ were nominated by our friends at WRAP and we made it through multiple stages of the process. The finalists were announced at the end of the year and unfortunately we didn’t make it to the last stage, but the Prize Foundation’s continued interest in our application through several rounds of unique and tough questions was exciting and rewarding.
This year, Prevented Ocean Plastic™ also won a Zero Waste Award, a Global Recognition Award, and we were invited to the Houses of Parliament to receive a Green World Award for commitment to environmental best practice, and Green World Ambassador status. And there’s more! Our founder, Raffi Schieir, was announced as a one of 2023’s Meaningful Business 100, and the British Plastics Federation highlighted Prevented Ocean Plastic™ at the top of their list of innovations in plastics 2023.
2023 was another breakthrough year for the Prevented Ocean Plastic™ programme. But we couldn’t have done it without our partners, without other businesses wanting to do better, or without you! Thank you to everyone who’s contributed to such a fantastic year. Here’s to a successful 2024.
