Last year Prevented Ocean Plastic led a global partnership representing all stages of the supply chain has worked together to develop a recycled polypropylene (PP) offering that achieved food-safe status, a European first for this type of plastic. This breakthrough means the collection of discarded PP can be properly incentivised, and the material can finally be recycled at scale, preventing it from reaching landfills and oceans, and turned into high-quality food-safe packaging for consumer use.
Globally over 80,000,000 tonnes of polypropylene are produced every year (second most commonly used plastic behind PET) with estimates suggesting less than 1% of PP is recycled due to gaps in collection infrastructure, technology, and financial incentives for collection. And up until now much of the PP that is collected for recycling has gone into low cost materials for the production of non food contact items such as construction materials, crates & pallets, and thereby, not into high quality resins for food safe packaging applications. Historically mechanically recycled PP use into food safe quality categories for flexibles has not been possible, especially not in Europe. Argos and Innovia are now helping to change this, opening huge volume opportunities for better collection of rPP.
Using Starlinger Viscotec technology, POP is delivering this world first solution for rPP to its partners and they, in turn, are creating world first products – like PF Concept‘s world first reusable coffee cups made from 50% mechanically recycled PP launched in the new year.
