POP Spotlight: Bumboo in 2025

By July 21, 2025No Comments

Bumboo have chosen Prevented Ocean Plastic™. The eco friendly toilet paper brand have produced a new cleaning range packaged in Prevented Ocean Plastic™. We spoke to the company’s founder and CEO, Rob Ingram, to find out what was behind their decision.

Hello, Rob! Please introduce yourself.

“Hi, I’m Rob, and I’m the founder and CEO of Bumboo. I started the company with a simple but urgent mission- to make everyday essentials more sustainable without compromising on quality or design.”

  • For anyone unfamiliar, can you talk about how Bumboo started, the products you offer, and how they stand out?

“Of course! Bumboo began as a response to a very real problem- deforestation and waste in everyday products, especially toilet paper. We make toilet roll using 100% bamboo, which grows quickly, regenerates naturally, and requires no fertiliser or pesticides.

Since then, we’ve expanded into other essentials like tissues and kitchen roll. What sets us apart is not just the product, but our packaging and purpose. We use our beautifully designed products as a tool for education- to spark conversations around rewilding and sustainability. Plus, we donate to rewilding causes with every purchase.

Our new cleaning range will be packaged using Prevented Ocean Plastic, turning waste into something genuinely useful. But what makes these products really stand out is that they’re designed to do good at every stage. The packaging is better for the environment, the formulas are free from harsh chemicals so they’re safer for homes and families, and because customers add water at home, we massively cut down on transport emissions. Plus, they look great on the shelf. And the sleek bottle design and tiny refill pods mean they take up barely any space in your cupboard.

  • Bumboo was founded with sustainability and its core- is that an area you think the toilet paper business has been behind on?

“Yes, massively. The traditional toilet paper industry relies heavily on virgin trees. Around 27,000 trees are cut down every single day for loo roll. It just doesn’t make sense when there are better alternatives like bamboo or recycled fibres.

We fully support recycled toilet paper as a short-term fix- it’s a great way to reduce waste and make use of materials that already exist. But we also know that recycled fibre is a finite resource. As demand grows and supply shrinks, we need long-term solutions that are regenerative by design. That’s why we’re investing in making our bamboo manufacturing process the best it can be- so we can always offer products that are kind to the planet.

It’s also worth noting that a small number of massive companies dominate this space. Brands owned by giants like Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, and Essity control a significant share of the global toilet paper market- and their reliance on virgin tree pulp is a big part of the problem. When we launched Bumboo, we became the first company to bring bamboo toilet paper to the UK. That was a conscious decision- to disrupt a system that felt outdated, unsustainable, and in need of urgent change.

We’re here to challenge the status quo and show that you don’t have to sacrifice quality or convenience to choose better for the planet.”

It’s smart, scalable, and it genuinely makes a difference

  • Why did you choose to work with Prevented Ocean Plastic?

“It was a natural fit for us. Like Bumboo, Prevented Ocean Plastic is driven by the idea that waste doesn’t have to be waste. They’re doing amazing work to turn plastic collected near coastlines into usable, high-quality packaging. It’s smart, scalable, and it genuinely makes a difference- that’s exactly the kind of partner we want.

Working with POP is a chance to double down on our values and expand them into new product categories. Bamboo is brilliant for paper, but when it comes to packaging cleaning products, we needed a solution that was low-impact and circular. This partnership allows us to do that, and to contribute to reducing ocean-bound plastic in the process.

  • And what do you think choosing recycled means to your customers?

“Our customers trust us to do the right thing- to create products that work, but are also kind to the environment. They’ve got a lot on their plates already, so they choose Bumboo because they know we’ve done the thinking for them. They don’t have to second-guess whether something’s sustainable or safe. They know it’s both.

That’s exactly why we chose to package our new cleaning range in Prevented Ocean Plastic. To do it any other way would have been a violation of that trust. It’s not just about using recycled materials. It’s about always looking for better, lower-impact solutions, so our customers don’t have to compromise.”

  • What are you most excited about within the wider world of recycling and sustainability?

“There’s a lot to be optimistic about. From refillable systems to material innovations like mushroom packaging and seaweed films- we’re seeing huge leaps in how products can be made, shipped, and reused. For us, it’s exciting to think about how we can keep evolving our products to stay ahead of the curve while reducing waste even further.”

  • What are Bumboo’s ambitions for the future?

“Our goal is to make sustainable choices the norm, not the exception. That means expanding our product range, growing our community, and continuing to support rewilding efforts along the way.

We’re inspired by that brilliant Maya Angelou quote: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” That’s exactly how we work at Bumboo. We’re committed to constantly evolving, proactively looking for smarter, lower-impact ways to do things and staying ahead of the curve when it comes to sustainability. We don’t claim to be perfect, but we’re always moving forward- and bringing our customers with us on that journey.”
